Born and buried in Indian Creek, Texas Katherine Anne Porter was an American journalist and novelist who wrote critically acclaimed short stories like the collection, Flowering Judas and Other Stories
Larry McMurtry
Born and buried in Archer City, Texas, Larry McMurtry is truly a Texas Star. Not only did he win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction but he has an academy award for writing under his belt and numerous books or screenplays that were eventually turned into movies. You can thank him for The lonesome Dove mini-series or broke back down.
Cormac McCarthy
A Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist who wrote, The Road. While technically not from Texas, Cormac McCarthy has spent enough time here to be able to write about it in great detail. Also, if you live for a long stretch of time in El Paso, inside what he described as a barely habitable shopping center, you get to claim EP, Texas status.
Estela Portillo Trambley
A Chicana poet and playwright, she not only was born in El Paso or grew up in Segundo barrio, but she also attended UTEP and taught at El Paso community college, all while being the first Chicana to publish a short story collection and the first to write a musical comedy.
