Aaron Jones Inks One-Year Deal with Vikings Following Release from Packers
It didn't take long for El Paso's running back to find a new home. Less than 24 hours after the Packers released Aaron Jones, the 29-year-old running back inked a one-year, $7 million deal to sign with the Vikings, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
In an inter-divisional signing, Showtyme will be able to face his former team twice in the 2024 season.
Reportedly, Green Bay and Jones' agents met last weekend to try and restructure his deal. He was set to make $12 million in salary and bonuses next season with a cap hit of $17+ million. Jones agreed to take a $5 million pay cut last offseason and was reportedly asked again to take a pay cut this season due to the salary cap issues the Packers were facing.
The talks broke down and instead of releasing Jones on Wednesday at the start of free agency, the Packers cut Jones Monday to allow him to try and find a new home. In a corresponding move, Josh Jacobs was signed by the Packers for a four-year, $48 million deal—a similar contract that Jones signed in Green Bay after his rookie deal was up.
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said in a statement: "It is certainly one of the hardest decisions we've had to make in my time with the Packers and not one taken lightly. He has not only had a significant impact on the field and in the locker room, but he is one of the most beloved players in the community."
UTEP's all-time leading rusher finished his seven-year tenure in Green Bay amassing 5,940 yards, averaging 5.0 yards per carry over 97 games and totaling 63 touchdowns.
Interestingly enough, Jones has owned the Vikings in the seven years with the Packers. His 847 against them through 11 games is his most against any NFL team. The Vikings, who signed quarterback Sam Darnold yesterday, released running back Alexander Mattison last week. Jones will be his replacement in the backfield, alongside change-of-pace back Ty Chandler.
