If El Pasoans have one shared hobby, it might be complaining that there’s “nothing to do” here. And to be fair… I’ve definitely said it too!

But after watching a pair of van-life YouTubers explore El Paso like it was some hidden desert gem, I kind of had to admit something: maybe we take this city for granted.

These Van-Life YouTubers Experienced El Paso Like First-Timers

Travel creators James and Keli recently stopped in El Paso while documenting their journey along the Pan-American Highway, a massive road trip that will eventually take them from Alaska to Argentina.

The couple lives full-time in a self-converted Ram Promaster van with their two cats, Luna and Stella, sharing travel adventures, border crossings, local culture, and the real side of van life on YouTube.

They walked across the border into Ciudad Juárez, grabbed tacos at the iconic L&J Cafe, explored the area, and ended the night driving through Scenic Drive to overlook the lights of both El Paso and Juárez.

And watching them react to it all was weirdly emotional.

Watching Their Videos Made Me Appreciate El Paso More

There’s something about seeing outsiders genuinely excited about El Paso that changes your perspective a little.

Because when you grow up here, it becomes easy to normalize things that are actually pretty incredible.

The mountains become “just mountains.” Scenic Drive becomes the place you take out-of-town family. Crossing into Juárez feels routine. Even legendary spots like L&J fade into the background because they’ve always been there.

But watching someone experience it all for the first time reminds you how unique this region really is.

Not every city has mountain views, deep border culture, historic local food spots, and two cities glowing side-by-side at night.

Seeing their excitement made me realize travelers probably appreciate El Paso more because they notice the things locals stopped paying attention to years ago.

Scenic Drive Never Really Gets Old

Out of everything they shared, Scenic Drive was probably the moment that hit hardest.

Because no matter how many times you’ve been there, seeing the lights stretch across El Paso and Juárez still feels unreal.

It’s one of those places we go to after concerts, graduations, heartbreaks, celebrations, or late-night drives just to clear their head. And seeing travelers fall in love with that exact same view kind of made me appreciate it all over again.

Maybe El Paso isn’t boring, maybe we’ve just been here long enough to forget how special it actually is.
