El Paso Already Has The Better Viral Dot Cake
Another day another TikTok trend!
TikTok has officially fallen in love with “dot cakes,” the colorful sprinkle-covered dessert cups that are suddenly everywhere online. People are waiting in long lines, posting ASMR spoon-cracking videos, and acting like they just discovered the greatest dessert known to mankind.
And they do look good. But if you grew up in El Paso, there’s a very good chance your first reaction was: “Wait… isn’t this basically cortadillo?”
Because while the internet is treating dot cakes like some revolutionary new dessert trend, borderland panaderías have been serving up soft cake topped with frosting and rainbow sprinkles for years.

What Exactly Is A Viral Dot Cake?
The viral “dot cake” trend started gaining traction thanks to TikTok videos showing small cake cups topped with thick frosting and crunchy rainbow nonpareils. The contrast between the soft cake and crunchy sprinkles is apparently what has the internet obsessed.
Most versions come in flavors like vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, and Funfetti, and they’ve become especially popular in New York bakeries where people are literally lining up for them.
But here in El Paso?
We’ve been eating something very similar for years without needing a viral TikTok trend to tell us it was good.
El Paso’s Cortadillo Deserves More Respect
If you’ve ever walked into a local panadería and spotted those colorful sprinkle-covered cake slices sitting behind the glass, you already know the magic of cortadillo.
Soft cake. Sweet frosting. Rainbow sprinkles. Simple, nostalgic, perfect with coffee or a cold glass of milk.
The biggest difference is that cortadillo feels less like a social media gimmick and more like a comfort food people actually grew up with.

For a lot of El Pasoans, cortadillo is tied to birthday parties, weekend pan dulce runs, family gatherings, and grabbing “just one thing” from the bakery before somehow leaving with two bags full of pan.
The Real Winners Are El Paso Panaderías
The best part about this trend is that it’s kind of a reminder to appreciate local bakeries that have been doing this style of dessert long before TikTok turned it into an aesthetic.
Places like Bowie Bakery, El Prado Bakery, Gussie's and La Esmeralda Bakery have been part of El Paso dessert culture for years.
That’s the thing about El Paso food culture: sometimes the internet catches up to flavors and traditions this city already knew about.
To be fair, dot cakes do look fun.
But for El Pasoans, this trend feels a little like watching the rest of the internet reinvent something our local bakeries have quietly perfected for years.
The viral version may come in trendy little cups, but the panadería version still wins.
Especially when it comes wrapped in wax paper next to a bag full of pan dulce!
