Quick synopsis if you don't want to follow that. I've meditated for most of my adult life. Just not as consistently as I'd like. So, I've made it a mission to really focus on it and do it once a day. I started out by downloading the Calm app on my phone. It comes with a 7 day free trial. I was going to go through the 7 days, then switch over to Headspace and use their 14 day free trial and see which one I preferred.

I had a feeling it was going to be a difficult choice, but it wasn't. I'm already back to Calm and just paid for the year subscription. I tried a few different meditations for Headspace and I was not impressed. Here are my thoughts:

  1. I did a 20 minute Headspace meditation and it was almost 18 minutes of silence. Yes, I understand you do need some silence with your meditation, but what am I paying for? I can do that on my own.
  2. Calm does give the option for music and sounds in the background.
  3. Calm is way more involved in guiding your meditation and that's what I'm looking for. I can meditate silently on my own.
  4. The meditations seem to be more thought out on Calm. It doesn't specifically sound like they're reading from a script, but Headspace seem like they just flipped on the mic and free styled the whole thing. It makes it feel awkward.

If you'd like to join me on my meditation journey, you can step in at any time. It doesn't matter how much you've done it before or if you want to pay for an app or not. That's the beauty of meditation. There's no wrong way. Do what works for you. If you need some help getting started or just want a nudge, give this a try.
