I was watching the re-naming ceremony for Ft. Benning in Georgia today.  It HAD been Ft. Moore , but for less than two years. It is being renamed Ft. Benning but NOT after the same man named “Benning” as before. Sounds complicated? We’re just getting started.

Ft. Benning was originally named after a Confederate general, Henry L. Benning. It was changed to Ft. Moore in 2023 in the midst of a national push to remove the names of Confederates (you know, the people who were in open revolt of their own country. Also, they lost.) from official government entities.

It was renamed in honor of Lt. General Hal Moore, who served during the Vietnam era. The Mel Gibson movie “We Were Soldiers” is about Moore.

Since Donald Trump retook office, there has been an effort to restore the original (read, Confederate) names that had been changed.  They’re using a trick way to do it, though. They’re re-re-naming the bases after people who just happen to have the same last name as the Confederate hero.  In this case, Ft. Benning is now named after Corporal FRED Benning, who served in World War I (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

I’m sure CORPORAL Benning is an improvement over the traitor Henry Benning.  But we can all see what’s going on here. It’s virtue-signaling for recalcitrant racists who make up a significant portion of Trump’s most loyal followers.  That’s what this is really all about, if everybody’s being completely honest.

That bring us to Ft. Bliss in El Paso, the second largest fort in the U.S.  I’m happy to say, it looks like the Bliss name is safe.

William Wallace Bliss was a U.S. Army officer who died BEFORE the Civil War took place.  Plus, it turns out he was kind of a renaissance man.

William Wallace Bliss was a mathematical genius who taught math at West Point.  He was a gifted linguist who spoke at least 13 languages fluently.  Also, he was a member of many scientific and academic societies. He served in Texas during the Indian Wars and the Mexican War. Also, he married President Zachary Taylor’s daughter.

But, most importantly, he died BEFORE the Civil War broke out, so he can’t get cancelled for that.
