History Revisited: Louisville Cardinals And Washington Huskies In Sun Bowl
The stage has been set for the 2024 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game in El Paso; the Louisville Cardinals will take on the Washington Huskies on December 31, 2024. This won't be the first time either team have played the Sun Bowl game but how have each team done in El Paso? Let's take a look at the team that has the least Sun Bowl appearances between the two.
The Louisville Cardinals have only played the El Paso Sun Bowl one time back in the 50s.
Yes it's been over half a century since the Louisville Cardinals have been here; they played the 23rd Sun Bowl game on January 1, 1958 & took on the 7-1 Drake Bulldogs. The Cardinals would end up taking the win, 34-20. Until their 2024 appearance, the Louisville Cardinals remain undefeated at the Sun Bowl. You can actually find old footage from that very same game right here on YouTube.
The Washington Huskies have been to the Sun Bowl a total of 4 times in the past
Since 1979, the Washington Huskies have made a total of 4 Sun Bowl game appearances with...varying levels of success. The Huskies first appearance was during the 46th Sun Bowl & would beat the Texas Longhorns, 14-7 (fans will remember this as the first game Coach Don James would play in El Paso too). That would be their last win so far.
The Huskies would reappear in 1986, 1995 & 2002 & would lose to Alabama, Iowa & Purdue respectively. However the Huskies ARE tied for 4th place for having the most Sun Bowl appearances; they're tied with Stanford, UCLA, Pittsburgh & North Carolina.
Both teams have won at the Sun Bowl & we will see if Louisville can keep their undefeated streak going or if the Huskies can get another victory once the 31st rolls around. If you want to see some other memorable Sun Bowl games, you can see some of our favorites here.
