Juan Gabriel’s Music Still Transcends Generations
Juan Gabriel was a big part of the soundtrack to my life.
My parents loved his music. My grandparents loved his music. And I think that's one of the things that makes Juan Gabriel so special- his music doesn't seem to belong to just one generation.
There is a Juan Gabriel song for just about every part of life. Heartbreak? Absolutely. Falling in love? Of course. Celebrating? He's got you. Mourning someone you've lost? There's a song for that too.
And if you needed proof that his music can still instantly connect with people decades later, we got plenty of it this summer.
Hearing “Así Fue” used throughout the World Cup was such a fun reminder of just how recognizable his music remains. A song released decades ago could play during one of the biggest sporting events in the world and people immediately knew it.
For the Borderland, that connection runs even deeper. Juan Gabriel called Juárez home, making the chance to experience one of the defining performances of his career on the big screen especially fitting for El Paso audiences.
Yes You’re Supposed to Sing Along
And don't worry about sitting silently through this movie.
Director of documentaries on the film Maria Jose Cuevas told KTSM the original 1990 Bellas Artes concert lasted nearly three hours, so some songs had to be left out of the theatrical version. Part of the process was choosing the songs audiences know best for one very important reason: they want the movie theater to become a massive karaoke session!
So yes, singing along is highly encouraged!
And considering how many generations of Borderland families grew up listening to Juan Gabriel, I don't think they'll have much trouble getting an El Paso theater full of people to sing!
