Battle of I-10 on Twitter? Miners and Aggies Throw Blows on Social Media
The Athletic put together a compilation of the 25 least dominant college football teams of the past 50 years and, as some might imagine, UTEP football was featured twice in the article released on Friday.
Coming in at No. 18, the 2017 Miners team that finished 0-12 took the spot on the list. This UTEP team was the worst in the country for total offense (11.8 ppg, 130th in FBS) and featured a mid-season coaching change after Sean Kugler resigned and Mike Price took over.
Ranking in the top five, according to The Athletic, the No. 4 spot was given to the 1973 Miners, which finished 0-11 too. Coached by Tommy Hudspeth, UTEP gave up 62 or better points four times that season. The closest game that year came against NM State, but the Aggies pulled away, 27-23.
Speaking of the Aggies, The Athletic's list on Friday prompted the NMSU football Twitter account to tweet some sarcasm for their rivals:
Fans, media members and even players chimed in on social media. The UTEP football Twitter account went for a comeback of their own.
NMSU, who has lost two games already due to cancellations, is dealing with a lot of uncertainty surrounding their football season this year. However, fans pointed out that the Aggies currently hold a three-game win streak against the Miners.
