UTEP Miners Mascot Paydirt Pete Debuts A Modern Redesign

The UTEP Miners iconic mascot is getting a makeover ... El Paso fans will have a new face riling 'em up on game day starting in September.

The UTEP Miners have given their mascot, Paydirt Pete, a new look this year as the University of Texas at El Paso shifts to what they call a more modern, "21st century look".

Starting in the fall, Paydirt Pete is going to look a little more miner - ish.

UTEP Gives Paydirt Pete "Miner" Vibes

Paydirt Pete has had a few image changes over his 50 or so years reppin' the Miners as the guy we know as Paydirt Pete. Here's his latest look.

The new, "live" Paydirt Pete won't be revving fans up at games until September but you can buy apparel with the new look now. Plush and bobblehead versions will also be coming this fall.

“Paydirt Pete is at the heart of game-day energy, and it's so exciting to have a new Pete joining us as part of the entertainment experience our fans love," said Bianca Marquez, director of UTEP Spirit Operations. "Our Cheer and Dance teams can't wait to perform alongside him and keep building that spirit in support of Miner Athletics." - UTEP

Paydirt Pete's History

Paydirt Pete hasn't always been the Miners mascot. Back when UTEP was still Texas Western College, the mascot was a goat. Yes, a live goat. He was replaced by another goat and then UTEP got "Pete".

The first character mascot, (and the name "Pete"), came along in in 1974 and he's changed quite an bit, (several times), over the years since then.
