Think back 4 years and just how much the border wall was being used on the national stage in regards to politics. Why is that? Well, Trump. Oh, and remember, Mexico was going to pay for it.

Now I'm not saying a wall isn't necessary. There are a lot of areas along the border that it is necessary. There's a reason your house has walls, and doors, and locks. You can't trust everyone. But the fear mongering and bulls*** that was being spewed over this was nothing but a tactic to get votes. And it worked. Trump won 4 years ago. However, putting a wall/fence on the US/Mexico border started long before Trump was even talking about it.

Acting Commissioner of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Mark Morgan talked about the wall that has been completed and the need for security:

The border wall system proves its worth every day with every mile. We need to know who is coming into our country. The border wall helps us achieve that.

Angela Kocherga, a border wall journalist for 30 years says:

The vast majority of this is not new wall, but replacement wall. It's not to say that those (upgrades) weren't needed, but that's very different than saying 'We put up a brand new wall

One issue on the border, at least in regards to the border patrol, is COVID-19. Morgan said that almost 5,000 Customs and Border Patrol agents have caught COVID-19, and that 21 staffers, mostly working on the front line, have passed away from the virus.
