New Mexico's become a political haven for certain Texans and not just those on its border with El Paso. Texas Dems are headed west and NM Dems aren't 100% on board.

Are "blue" Texans welcome in New Mexico? That depends on who you ask. The current political climate in Texas has some Democrats headed for the land of lib-chantment.  As Texas leans even more conservative, liberals are jumping ship.

Some Texas "reds" say, good riddance while some New Mexico "blues" ... even fellow Democrats ... are saying "go back home".

The number of liberal Texans leaving the state may not be enough to make a difference here but NM isn't as populated so an influx of democrats could really cement the states blue status. (Not that it really needs help there.) So, why are some "blues", blue about it?

Why Doesn't New Mexico Want Texas Liberals?

Among other things, some say the influx of liberal refugees is driving up real estate costs. On the political side, some worry that less hardcore Dems may dilute the party and push NM a tad conservative with regard to certain agendas.

Example: NM allows women access to abortion clinics and is very LGBTQ friendly. The state however is mostly Catholic, a religion that condemns abortion and isn't exactly LGBTQ's BFF.

While those groups have found peace in NM, a few transplanted, "semi" conservative, liberals could tip the scales in favor of their political and ideological enemies.

What Part Of NM Leans Red?

NM's blue status is also weaker in the area bordering the Permian Basin which relies on oil production AND a friendly relationship with Texas. The moral here being that not all Dems are as Dem as NM would like.

Will There Be A "Push"?

Maybe. As liberals flee Texas for New Mexico, conservative Californians are also headed to the 505. Politically, (theoretically), they could offset each other and allow New Mexico to stay the exact same shade of blue. Time will tell.
