There are some things you probably don't need a survey to tell you about Texas.

We like our barbecue. We have strong opinions about brisket. And if you're going to hand us two pieces of bread and call it lunch, you better put something good between them.

So when a new study set out to determine the favorite sandwich in every state, Texas had plenty of options.

Turkey? Nope.

Grilled cheese? Delicious, but we're going to need you to dream a little bigger.

Texas went with brisket! OF COURSE we did!

America Loves the Classics but Texas Had Other Ideas

Coventry Direct recently used Google Trends data from the past year to find the most searched-for sandwich in every state.

Across the country, Americans kept things pretty classic. Turkey and grilled cheese tied for first, each winning seven states, while pastrami on rye came next with four.

And there's nothing wrong with those choices. A grilled cheese can absolutely turn around a bad day.

But this is Texas, we're not putting a few slices of deli turkey between bread and calling it a day when there's perfectly good BRISKET available.

According to the study, brisket sandwiches were the most searched in Texas. Georgia picked brisket too, so congratulations to Georgia, they clearly know a good thing when they see it!

A Brisket Sandwich Is Basically Texas Between Two Buns

There's something beautifully uncomplicated about a great brisket sandwich.

Give us tender, smoky brisket piled onto a bun. Throw on some pickles and onions, maybe add barbecue sauce if that's your thing. And that's lunch!

Of course, Texans could probably spend hours arguing over chopped or sliced brisket, sauce or no sauce, and what kind of bread belongs underneath it. But there's one brisket sandwich that has become practically synonymous with the Texas road trip: Buc-ee's.

You stop for gas. You tell yourself you're only running inside for a minute. Then somebody yells "FRESH BRISKET ON THE BOARD!" and suddenly you're walking back to the car with a warm brisket sandwich, Beaver Nuggets and $40 worth of stuff you didn't know you needed!

It's messy, saucy and somehow tastes even better when you've still got three hours left on the highway.

Texas Couldn't Have Picked Anything Else

That's probably why brisket feels like such a perfect answer for Texas; a brisket sandwich isn't trying to be fancy, it's barbecue made portable.

It's the thing you grab at a barbecue joint when you don't want a whole plate. It's the road-trip lunch you eat in the car and immediately regret because now there's barbecue sauce somewhere it absolutely shouldn't be. And it's one of those foods that just feels like home.

So congratulations to turkey sandwiches and grilled cheese for conquering a good chunk of America; they're classics for a reason.

But Texas had brisket sitting right there, the choice was obvious!
