Missed The Northern Lights In Texas? You’ll Get A Chance Again
Did you miss the Northern Lights when they illuminated the Texas skies?
Well, you're not the only one- I missed them too! While many Texans, and others in the southern states, were mesmerized by the phenomenon there I was, at 9:30 p.m. on a Friday night, asleep!
In case you missed it, like I did, an extreme geometric storm brought the aurora borealis to many around the world- including in Texas! At first, the news that the northern lights would make an appearance in the southern skies was a bit unbelievable, but then later that night, the photos of Texans checking out the lights began to flood social media, and I began to experience major FOMO!
If you also experienced FOMO and missed the lights, don't worry, there's a big chance that the phenomenon will happen again! According to astronomers, the intensity and visibility of the auroras are influenced by solar activity, with periods of increased solar activity, such as solar storms, leading to more spectacular displays.
Bryan Brasher of the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) told Chron that the geo storm we experienced over the weekend was at a level G5 and said:
An event of that level is pretty rare. I'm not going to say we won't see one of those again. It's certainly possible.
It's totally possible; not too long ago, the Texas skies were blessed by the northern lights and it's definitely a sigh to behold.
I just hope the next time this happens, I get a better heads up! If they spent all that time hyping up the eclipse, I'm going to need them to bring that same energy for the next time this happens because I really want to see the aurora borealis!
