Lisa’s List For Her Perfect ‘Run Hit Wonder’ 5K Bands
The Run Hit Wonder 5K was an event held in the early 2000s, that's disappeared from existence. If we could start the race again, what bands would we want? It seems everywhere you go in the United States, there are all types of interesting and unique 5K and 10K runs happening. There are some that include you dressing up, getting covered in different colored paint or powder and even drinking while you run.
Back in 2003, there was an amazing idea for a 5K run which we can't understand why this is still not a thing. The Run Hit Wonder 5K and 10K were held in several cities around the United States and continued in 2004 and 2005. Along the course of the run, one hit wonder bands would perform and there would be a big concert at the end of the course. Some of the bands that have performed during the Run Hit Wonder 5K included Devo, A Flock of Seagulls, Chingy, The Donnas, Fountains of Wayne and Nina Sky.
This was a great idea for a 5K event and had some serious lasting power. The sheer number of one hit wonders out there, plus the evergrowing popularity of 5Ks could make this an event never ending. Organizers could even do themed 5Ks with pop acts, rock acts, by the decades and more. Alas, the event is no more and the chance for fans to run to make it to the front row to catch "Whip It Good" are gone. But if this event came back, here are the five artists I would want to see performing at my ultimate Run Hit Wonder 5K event:
Toni Basil "Mickey"
A great song to kick off the event, and the only not rock act on my RUn Hit Wonder 5K. Mostly because I've always loved this song and feel it needs to be appreciated. Also, a great reason to dress up as a cheerleader for the run. Because, why not?
Lustra "Scotty Doesn't Know"
This song is a total sing-along tune that everyone knows, even if you haven't seen the Eurotrip movie. Like me.
American Hi-Fi "Flavor of the Week"
This song never gets skipped on when it pops up on my iTunes. Another great tune that reminds me of good times when I was younger, plus upbeat enough to keep me pumped up during a 5K.
Nine "Absolutely (Story Of A Girl)"
I have to thank Now That's What I Call Music for keeping this song alive in my heart and in my iTunes.
Chumbawumba "Tubthumping"
This is probably one of my top 10 favorite songs of the late 1990s. I don't know why, but I still have the album and still listen to this song at least once a month. If you're ever having a bad day, or feel really down on yourself, put on this song and remember that no one will ever keep you down. When you get knocked down, get up again.
Honorable Mentions:
Deep Blue Something "Breakfast at Tiffanys"
Fountains of Wayne "Stacy's Mom"
Switchfoot "Meant To Live"
The Calling "Wherever You WIll Go"
Sarina Paris "Look At Us"
Afroman "Because I Got High"
J-Kwon "Tipsy"
Modern English "I'll Melt With You"
