El Paso Man Arrested In California For Easter Sunday Stabbing

One of El Paso's most wanted fugitives is under arrest after being tracked to California. U.S. Marshals arrested Sergio Armando Escamilla Tuesday in Northridge, California, a Los Angeles suburb. Escamilla is wanted for the Easter Sunday stabbing of Alfredo Carmona in what investigators believe was a gang related attack. Escamilla was arrested without incident and will now await extradition to El Paso to face charges of aggravated assault and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Juarez Records Region's First Case Of Locally Contracted Chikungunya

Juarez health officials are reporting the first locally contracted case of chikungunya virus in the El Paso region. In a video press conference yesterday, doctors confirmed that a 12-year-old boy is the first from this area to come down with symptoms. Seven other cases have been reported in Chihuahua state, but those people were all from outside the area. Officials say the boy and the rest of those infected are recovering. Chikungunya is acquired through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Abbott Issues Call For Police Lights In Tribute To Fallen Officer

If you see a lot of El Paso police units flashing their lights this Friday, they may be doing so in tribute to a fellow law enforcement officer. Governor Greg Abbott is asking all law enforcement officers statewide to pay tribute to a fallen Harris County sheriff's deputy at 11 a.m. Friday. The governor is asking that officers turn on their rooftop lights for one minute as the funeral of Deputy Darren Goforth gets underway. Goforth was shot last Friday as he filled the gas tank on his police cruiser at a convenience store in Houston.

Fire Department Holds Meeting On Proposed Ordinance

The El Paso Fire Department will hold an informational meeting today about a proposed vacant property ordinance it wants the City Council to pass. The meeting at fire department headquarters on North Stanton will go over the proposed ordinance and the reason the fire department wants it passed. If put into effect, the ordinance would require the owners of vacant buildings in the city to secure their property to ensure vagrants and other trespassers could not gain entry. The fire department says there are over 100 vacant building in downtown El Paso that are at risk of possible fire because they are not secure.
