High School Football Live Scoreboard & 5 Things to Know

To call the 2020 high school football season a roller coaster of a year would be an understatement.

There have been countless postponements and cancelations. Teams are having to constantly be ready to make changes on a day-to-day basis. It's been difficult for everyone involved—coaches, players, parents, athletic directors... you name it.

Nearly a handful of cancelations/postponements came this week but nonetheless, we are somehow kicking off week four action of the local high school football scene.

High school football cancelations

Another week, another batch of cancellations.

Most of the school districts in El Paso are on a two week intercession period and aren't in school. Still, athletics are being impacted through positive cases of COVID-19. As my good friend Felix Chavez of the El Paso Times put it, this year should be about praising some of our best prospects in town instead of constantly reporting on cancellations/postponements.

Three of the most recent games to get canceled/postponed this week include Franklin-Eastlake (Thurs.), Bel Air-Ysleta and Cathedral-Tornillo. These three were canceled 24 hours or less before kickoff. Additionally, contests between Eastwood-Montwood and Del Valle-Canutillo were postponed earlier this week due to COVID-19 complications.

For the Bel Air and Ysleta matchup, it is unlikely the game will be made up due to it being a non-district game. Prep 1 was the first to report the cancellation. The Franklin-Eastlake game was suspended only hours before the Thursday kickoff. The Falcons (1-0) haven't played since week one of the season.

It's the harsh reality of a pandemic-struck season.

Weekday football might become a trend

As we saw this past week and as we plan to see this upcoming week, odd weeknight games could become widely used across districts for reschedulings.

This past week, a rare Wednesday night game took place between Americas and Pebble Hills (Americas won, 36-17) to help both teams squeeze a game this week. San Elizario (1-2) will face Fabens (0-3) on Monday following a COVID-19 related rescheduling. This might become a popular trend for these make-up games.

There was even an idea of having a Monday/Saturday game for Pebble Hills next week involving Eastwood (Oct. 26) and Socorro (Oct. 31) but nothing is finalized, as first reported by Prep 1.

Aaron Dumas is putting together a special senior year so far

Through just two games, Americas senior running back Aaron Dumas has been putting up some special numbers. He finished the Pebble Hills game with 224 rushing yards and three touchdowns en route to the team's first win in 1-6A.

The New Mexico Lobos commit is only 1,554 rushing yards away from the all-time city rushing record, as pointed out by Alex Nicolas this week.

Of course, the opportunity will be uncertain amid the pandemic. Dumas averages 211 rushing yards per game but the Trail Blazers only have four scheduled games left on the season after a few postponements earlier this year. If Americas is able to play six games in total, there's a chance he could get there with some monster rushing games.

A small slate of Friday night games

Only seven games in the El Paso area this week following a really small slate last week. It's a product of the postponements/cancellations that keep coming through for most of these schools.

Parkland (1-1) vs. El Dorado (0-1) is possibly the best game of the day as a non-district matchup. The battle of the winless Chapin (0-2) vs. Hanks (0-3) will square off to give one of these programs a win on the board. The Huskies would want to follow up their close loss to Andress last week for the first win of the Ryan Warner era. Andress (2-0) is off to a commanding start to the season following wins over Franklin and Chapin. They will face a struggling Bowie (0-2) team on Friday. Similarly in district play, Burges (0-2) will try to get their first win of the season as they play Jefferson (1-1), who has looked sharp to start.
