A special needs student, Michael Kelley at Wichita East High School was asked to remove his letter jacket, after parents complained to school officials. His mother bought the letter for her son's jacket, since he participates in extra-curricular special needs basketball. Unfortunately, other parents weren't happy about her actions.

East High Principal Ken Thiessen says parents were complaining to school officials about Michael wearing the jacket. According to his mother, a teacher went up to the student and asked him to remove the jacket and gave him a sweatshirt to wear instead. The Thieseen family was told only varisity teams could wear letters, according to school policy. KSN found out that that rule wasn't actually in the policy.

When KSN asked Principal Thiessen about the possibility of giving letters to special need kids he said, “We have considered it, and our decision was no. We decided that is not appropriate in our situation because it is not a varsity level competition.”

A press conference was held on Saturday, but no word on if any changes will be made to the policy yet.
