The El Paso Fire Department is honoring children oncology patients by naming them honorary firefighters next week.

The El Paso Fire Department and the Providence Pediatric Specialty Clinic are joining together for the Hearts of Courage event. Local oncology patients will be named honorary firefighters by the El Paso Fire Department. The event will take place this coming Monday, November 14th and will begin at 9 a.m. at the Providence Pediatric Specialty Clinic. The Providence Pediatric Specialty Clinic is located at 2101 North Oregon Street in El Paso.

Here's a statement by FST Efrain Garcia:

This is an annual event that is put on by the fire department for all the children who are battling cancer at Providence Hospital West. Children are made honorary firefighters by the El Paso Fire Department in memory of Jose Eduardo Licon whose wish was to grow up to be a firefighter. He lost his fight, but his memory lives on through this annual event.

Also on hand will be the Local 51 Combat Challenge Team. The team will be demonstrating their skills and displaying their fire apparatus.
