El Paso Sportscaster on ESPN’s SportsCenter After NMSU Scandal
Local El Paso sports anchor Colin Deaver is making some headlines again. You may remember his shot at Tom Brady's retirement recently, or that time he didn't mince words when all of El Paso (and beyond) was upset about Ricardo Pepi's snub from the U.S. Men's National Team in the World Cup.
And if you know Colin, you know he's also pretty good at his job. He is often breaking major stories in the Borderland and covers them in-depth. He has been a staple in El Paso sports since 2018.
The latest scandal at New Mexico State University with the men's basketball program has been no exception for Deaver. Knee-deep in constant breaking news coming out more and more each day, he even had to forfeit Super Bowl Sunday festivities for Aggie coverage.
Seems like a good sign when ESPN takes notice. Especially when SportsCenter needed someone in Las Cruces with boots on the ground.
The KTSM Sports Director was featured as a guest on an Outside The Lines segment on Wednesday, proving the Super Bowl sacrifice was worth it.
It's no surprise he crushed his appearance and he deserved that. Way to make El Paso proud, Deaver! Even our very own stupid jerk Steve Kaplowitz.
There was some new information provided by the Chancellor and Athletic Director of New Mexico State University this week. Check out Deaver in all his glory before reading on to find out the latest.
Chancellor Dan Arvizu said Greg Heiar was fired with cause and that there is no settlement in his termination.
"I am disgusted and angry," Arvizu said about the hazing allegations surrounding the men's basketball program, adding that it was "infected by a culture of bad behavior."
It wasn't even just the hazing allegations that come into question right now. Chancellor Arvizu was asked about Greg Heiar's cooperation with the investigation into the deadly shooting on the UNM campus involving NMSU basketball player Mike Peake. Arvizu said Heiar hired outside counsel and that it was "difficult" to speak with him about it. He added that they were scheduled to meet earlier this week, but Heiar "did not show up."
