You Won’t Believe How Old These El Paso Restaurants Are
Believe it or not, some of the best known restaurants in El Paso have been around for a really long time. One is over 100 and some are run by 2nd and 3rd generation family members.
Many restaurants have come and gone over the years, some quickly, some not so quickly. Chuy's Mexican Food, for example, is about to end a 10 year run in the Fountains at Farah.
Others have been at it for decades and are still going strong. One downtown eatery has over 100 years under it's belt, (Cafe Central, 107), and "the old place by the graveyard" is almost at the century mark. (L 'n J Cafe, 98)
Many of El Paso's oldest restaurants are family operations that started out with, and continue to use, cherished family recipes that have gone unchanged over the years. One is upscale, one's a "dive" and ... except for the Italian Kitchen ... they all, not surprisingly, serve Mexican food. One, The New Clock, does a mean breakfast too.
Everyone has their own opinion as to how good the food at these places is and one is a very polarizing place that people seem to love to hate. (YOU guess which one.) No matter what you think of the 10 oldest restaurants in El Paso, 'ya gotta admit ... they're doing something right.
How Often Do Restaurants Fail?
Especially since most, (60%), restaurants fail in the first year and an astounding 80% go under within the first 5 years. Seriously, racking up these kinds of numbers is impressive.
You've probably tried all of these at least once and, if you haven't, you totally should. No need to hurry though, take your time. I don't think any of them are going anywhere anytime soon.
