Did You Know Taos, New Mexico is Home to a Bizarre Scientific Mystery?
After reading through my newsfeed recently, I came across the craziest old article from LiveScience.com about a strange phenomenon that regularly happens to the people who live in Taos, New Mexico.
If you didn't know, Julia Roberts and Dennis Hopper are among a few of the notable OG's of Taos, a small town located in north-central New Mexico.
But, in addition to its famous inhabitants, did you know this hippy-dippy New Mexico town is also known for the "Taos Hum," a mysterious and persistent hum of unknown origin that has been reported by some residents since the early 1990s?
Despite various theories that have been proposed to explain the hum, from the mundane to the paranormal, its source remains elusive to scientists and mystics alike.
Research has shown that different people hear different sounds, leading some to believe that the hum may be a personal or subjective experience rather than an objective external sound.
Some researchers suggest that the phenomenon known as spontaneous otoacoustic emissions could be responsible for some people's perception of the hum.
I've always been told that spontaneous emissions were a bad thing.
The fact that only a small percentage of the population hears the hum is also puzzling, and some believe that those who do hear it may have unusually keen hearing or be experiencing an auditory hallucination.
However, the scientific community remains open to exploring and explaining this, for now, unexplained phenomenon.
Calling Mulder and Scully.
