City of El Paso Says Warming Centers Aren't Being Used

The El Paso Office of Emergency Management is concerned that the community isn't taking advantage of the community warming centers. Due to the extreme weather conditions in El Paso, the City opened up its community centers to offer citizens relief from either the extreme heat or the extreme cold.

The current cold snap El Paso was anticipating since last week, prompted the City to open up warming centers for citizens to keep warm. However, the snow fell and the community centers remained empty. This could mean one of two things; either citizens at risk (like the elderly) were perfectly warm during the snow storm or, citizens were not aware of these facilities.

A KFOX report says the warming centers were open up until today- and no word yet on whether they would open up again for what promises to be a cold week. However, seeing as how these centers weren't being used- it's possible that they may not reopen them again. If they do open up again and you're in jeopardy of not having heat- it is highly encouraged that you use these warming centers.

For now, as the winter weather continues through the week, the El Paso Office of Emergency Management advises residents to:

Avoid unnecessary trips outside. If you must go out, limit the time you stay outside.
Wear several layers of loose, warm clothing.
Keep your head, hands and feet covered when outdoors.
Stay dry, moisture can damage the insulating effectiveness of clothing.
Pay extra attention to your daily needs: get enough sleep, eat high energy foods, drink warm beverages to help your body stay warm, and avoid alcoholic beverages.
Roads may become icy and slippery. If you have to drive, remember to slow down and keep your full attention on the road.
Maintain enough distance from vehicles in front of you.
