How am I just finding out about this? Move over Punxsutawney Phil, Texas has something way better!

While most of the country gathers around a groundhog in Pennsylvania every Feb. 2, Texans have been quietly- and proudly- doing their own thing. Instead of waiting on a shadow, Central Texas turns to an armadillo named Bee Cave Bob to predict how much winter is left.

Texas’ Answer to Groundhog Day Is an Armadillo

Bee Cave Bob has been making winter predictions since 2010 as part of Armadillo Day, Bee Cave’s very Texas response to Groundhog Day. The idea was simple: Texas weather is different, Texas culture is different, so why would Texans rely on a groundhog from Pennsylvania to tell them what’s coming next?

Instead, locals chose the armadillo because, of course, it’s the official small mammal of Texas- and built a tradition around it that blends weather forecasting, community pride, and a healthy dose of Hill Country humor.

Armadillo Day Is a Texas Tradition

Armadillo Day isn’t just about the forecast. It’s a full-on Texas gathering.

Held each year at Boothe Ranch in Bee Cave, the event features prayer, chili, tamales, local leaders, longtime residents, and neighbors catching up while waiting for Bob to make his appearance. His movements are carefully observed by the proudly unofficial Lone Star Weatherological Society, which insists their methods are just as reliable as any modern forecast- maybe even more so!

It’s part civic ritual, part small-town celebration, and a reminder that some traditions don’t need to be high-tech to matter.

So What Did Bee Cave Bob Predict?

This year, Bee Cave Bob called it: three more weeks of winter for Central Texas.

No shadows. No top hats. Just an armadillo doing what Texans trust him to do.

Considering Punxsatawney Phil is only correct about 35% of the time, I think I'll trust the armadillo!

Whether Bee Cave Bob’s prediction turns out to be spot-on or not, one thing’s for sure: when it comes to weather, tradition, and a little Lone Star swagger, Texas doesn’t follow the crowd, it leads it.
