The food at the state fair is always good but the State Fair of Texas has arguably the best food out there. Now we have the winners! The competition was tough this year for the best food at the 2018 Texas State Fair. In the beginning, there were 49 entries and 39 contenders for the awards. The list has some seriously delicious sounding items on there and there are a ton on the list so check them all out at the KERA News website.

Now let's get into the items that made such an impact, they made it to the next round. The top ten finalists had some great entries on there that we would love to get our hands on. They included the Deep Fried Sheperd's Pie, Deep Fried Skillet Potato Melt in a Boat, Fernie's Orange You Glad We Fried It?!, State Fair Fun-L Cake Ice Cream, Sweet Bakin' Bacon, Texas Fried Hill Country, Texas Twang-kie . Check out some photos of the items and their descriptions here. But there could only be one champion for each category, and here are the three winners for each!

Best Taste, Savory- Fernie's Hoppin' John Cake with Jackpot Sauce. This dish was created by Winter Family Concessions and includes "creamy black-eyed peas, fluffy white rice, spicy smoked sausage, aromatic green onions and a secret blend of spices are combined with breadcrumbs and eggbeaters to form a generous Texas-sized cake. This savory cake is breaded, deep-fried, and topped with a zingy black-eyed pea relish, garnished with pickled okra, and served with a side of Jackpot Sauce." The dish looks like a beautiful cake and it's hard to imagine so many flavors and ingredients all packed into the beautiful, breaded cake. But I'd love to taste and find out.

Best Taste, Sweet- Arroz Con Leche (Sweet Crispy Rice) is a creation by the Garza Family. This dish looks like what I'd imagine a Cinnamon Toast Crunch dessert would look like. This has in it a "cinnamon-spiced rice ball is battered and coated with crispy, puffed rice cereal. Then, the ball is deep fried, sprinkled with powdered vanilla and served with vanilla ice cream. A drizzle of caramel sauce and powdered cinnamon completes the dessert."

Most Creative - Cotton Candy Taco is the brainchild of Justin and Rudy Martinez. At first glance this treat looks like a waffle taco shell full with a heaping pile of delicious ice cream but this treat is so much more. This dish includes "a graham cracker waffle cone is freshly-pressed into a crunchy taco shell shape and coated with a marshmallow glaze, then stuffed with chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and organic cane sugar cotton candy. It’s then topped off with chocolate cookie crumbles and two chocolate cream-covered biscuit sticks with marshmallows."

The Texas State Fair happens from September 28th through October 21st in Dallas, Texas. With all this great food in one place, this could be a foodie's dream road trip!
