A new list, based on Yelp reviews, has narrowed down the best restaurants to enjoy when you're wandering around downtown El Paso to 6 and one is a little surprising.

I say surprising because it's not a Mexican food place. El Paso is the Mexican food capitol of the world so Mexican cuisine tends to win these things but the first one on this list was something pretty different.

In a good way because it's a type of food I love.

I have always loved Cajun food. I grew up in Houston and, with family and friends in and around New Orleans, it's one of my comfort foods. Along with a good green chicken enchilada plate or some tacos of course.

Cajun was a rarity in El Paso for many years though but now, there are several places to go in El Paso to get your jambalaya or blackened Catfish Etouffee on. One of those is Mac's Downtown, located at 315 E. Mills.

EP Times used Yelp ratings and reviews to narrow this list down and, based on 258 reviews and a near perfect 4.5-star rating, Mac's Downtown pops up first on their list. Check out their menu here.

Who Else Made The Top 6 Downtown El Paso Restaurants List?

The rest of the list, sans The Tap for some reason, went like this:

  • Lamezze - 210 N. Stanton St., Suite 4
  • Mamacitas Cafe and Cantina - 325 N. Kansas St.
  • Taft Diaz - 209 N. Stanton St.
  • The Tiki Room - 115 Durango St.
  • Barrio Eats and Drinks - 502 N. Oregon St., Suite A
