Urban Legend Becomes Reality: Tourists Buys Rodents they Thought Were Dogs
One of the most well-known and oft-repeated Urban Legends of all time is called “The Mexican Pet”.
In it an American (or Canadian or British) tourist in Mexico adopts an adorable Chihuahua puppy they found in an alleyway.
Long story short, when the tourist takes their “dog” to the veterinarian, the vet tells them their new pet is actually “a very large Mexican sewer rat”!
This old chestnut has been around since at least the 1980’s. But now, it looks like the legend has manifested itself into our reality.
The UK’s Daily Mail reports on a man (not a tourist) in Argentina (not Mexico) who buys what he THINKS are two teacup poodle puppies (not Chihuahuas).
First visit to the vet’s finds that, uh-oh, these aren’t puppies…they’re actually FERRETS that have pumped full of steroids and had their hair teased out to look more like a poodle! They even have pictures.
The caption on the Daily Mail story says, “No longer an Urban Legend”…however, this still FEELS like I’m repeating an old Urban Legend.
The purchaser of the rat/dogs said that he thought he was getting “a great deal on an expensive breed of dogs”.
The story of the juiced up ferrets being sold as toy poodles has yet to be debunked. To be on the safe side, I’m going to check my bathroom for “toilet gators” and I definitely WON’T be saying “Candyman” three times in front of a mirror.
Just to be on the safe side.
