Canned Tuna Sold in Texas Recalled
Certain canned tuna products sold at Texas Costco, H-E-B, Trader Joe's and Walmart stores have been recalled due to botulism risk.
Tri-Union Seafoods has initiated a voluntary recall of specific canned tuna products due to a manufacturing defect in the "easy-open" pull tab lids. This defect may compromise the seal integrity, potentially leading to contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium responsible for botulism—a rare but serious illness that can cause breathing difficulties, muscle paralysis, and even death.
What Brands Are Recalled?
According to a release, the item names and descriptions of impacted Texas products include:
- H-E-B Solid White Tuna in Water 5.0 oz 4 Pack
- Genova Solid White Tuna in Olive Oil 5.0 oz
- Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil 5.0 oz
- Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil 5.0 oz 4 Pack
Consumers are advised not to consume these products, even if they appear normal, as Clostridium botulinum contamination may not be detectable by sight or smell. Affected products should be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund, discarded, or consumers can contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and replacement coupon. For assistance, reach out via email at support@thaiunionhelp.zendesk.com or call 833-374-0171, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST.
As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. However, consumers experiencing symptoms such as difficulty breathing, muscle weakness, or paralysis after consuming the affected products should seek immediate medical attention.
