This is the Perfect Week to Make Caldo in the Borderland
El Paso is getting a rest from the heat as temperatures will dip into the 80's and high 70's for the week. We're also getting some much needed (heavy) rain in the borderland after a few months without it.
This weather is perfect for a few things, like maybe some café con pan (coffee and Mexican sweet bread), some hot chocolate and even some caldo! That's right, even though it's summer, it's the perfect time to make some caldo! A nice caldo de res, or caldo de pollo, heck, even some albondigas would go perfect with this weather!
If you'll remember, a couple of years ago, El Paso was in the middle of a heat advisory, as it is every year, and right in the middle of a 105 degree day, my mom made caldo. Don't get me wrong, I love me some caldo but, read the room woman! It was 105 degrees outside and inside the house when my mom made the caldo!
At the time, as I was melting in my own house, I came across this video that showed I wasn't the only victim of caldo in the summer, but all my fellow Hispanics had also experienced it.
At the time, I also learned something new. As much as I complained, science says that eating hot soup, temperature wise as well as spicy foods, will actually cool your body down. According to the Special Broadcasting Service, when you consume hot food or drinks, the heat increases the rate at which you sweat, which can help cool you off.
So, because of the wonderful weather we'll be getting, this is the perfect week to make some caldo. Bust out with the big pots, by the way, does anyone else's mom have this same exact pot when she makes caldo?
Anyway, we made caldo in my house today and it was delicious.
But also, THIS IS THE ONLY WEEK THAT THIS IS ALLOWED! Once those temperatures rise and creep back into the triple digits, caldo is not allowed for the rest of the summer. Save that for October/November!
