It's been quite awhile since I've actually woken up on a Saturday morning, poured myself a bowl of cereal and camped out on the couch for a cartoon marathon; these days I'm more likely to sleep in.

The days of Saturday morning cartoons may be in the rear view mirror, but thanks to streaming services, those days aren't completely gone. But when you're sitting to watch some of your old favorite cartoons, which one are you watching?

Well, it turns out that each state in the country has their own favorite cartoon! That's at least according to Shane Co. who conducted a study using search interest on Google Trends to map out the top-searched retro Nickelodeon shows in every U.S. state.

Notice how they use the word "retro"- in this case, the "retro" refers to shows that aired their first episode prior to 2005.

Among the list of shows that were popular were some of the OG Nickelodeon shows that I, a 90's kid, grew up loving like:

  • Rugrats
  • The Wild Thornberry's
  • Ren & Stimpy
  • Hey Arnold!
  • CatDog

And it also had some that I never watched like Danny Phantom, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Chalkzone. If you're noticing that I'm leaving out one BIG Nick cartoon, it's because that's the one that made it as the favorite cartoon in the Lone Star state: Spongebob Squarepants!

Spongebob was popular in four states total; Texas, California, North Carolina and Oklahoma. Spongebob has been a staple in pop culture since its debut in 1999 and it doesn't look like it's dying down anytime soon!

You can check out the entire list here and judge it like it did especially since it added shows like Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers- which wasn't even a Nickelodeon show to begin with!
