A seventh grade student in Katy, Texas, says she was told to answer 'false' to the statement "God is real" on a classroom assignment to get it correct.

Jordan Wooley is a seventh grader at West Memorial Junior High School in Katy, and she and her mother have some complaints about a recent assignment in her reading class.

Wooley says she was told by the teacher to deny God exists on a classroom assignment to get the question correct.

Katy Independent School District and the school has apologized for the assignment and said that the teacher that came up with the assignment is distraught about the situation.

When faced with the "True" or "False" statement "There is no God," Jordan Wooley explained her answer:

"I said it was fact or opinion," said Wooley, adding she answered that way because "based on my religion and based on what I think and believe, I do not think it was a common place assertion."

Although her answer was eloquently worded and correct for her and her family's own personal beliefs, the teacher said it was incorrect. Woodley said her teacher said both her answers were wrong and she had to admit that God isn't real.

Woodley said she was confused by the question and the assignment, so she texted her situation in class to her mother. Her mother couldn't believe it. Jordan and her mother Chantel then decided to take their complaint about the assignment all the way to the Katy ISD's Board of Education meeting.

Katy ISD released a statement on Tuesday, explaining that the question was a part of a critical thinking assignment and was not supposed to question a student's religious beliefs.

"Still this does not excuse the fact that this ungraded activity was ill-conceived and because of that, its intent had been misconstrued."

The school has said that the assignment was not graded for credit, but Wooley said it was graded and she would have had to deny her faith to get credit for that question.

"I love reading so for me personally to have to fail reading because of what my beliefs are just shocked me."

Katy ISD is asking people to not vilify the teacher because she is distraught and she is, in fact, a Christian as well. Read more at KHOU news.
