Two Texas Legends Are Telling a Yankee's Story

There's something I really love about Texans who never stop being Texan.

Richard Linklater has spent decades becoming one of the state's most celebrated filmmakers, while Glen Powell has quickly become one of Hollywood's biggest stars- all while proudly calling Texas home.

If you've followed either of them, you know they're never shy about their Lone Star roots. Which is exactly why I had to do a double take when I saw what they're making next. Because somehow, two of Texas' biggest names are teaming up to tell the story of one of New York's greatest sports legends. I'll admit, that wasn't the movie announcement I expected to see this week.

Glen Powell & Richard Linklater Team Up For Lou Gehrig Film

Linklater is set to direct a new film about New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig, with Powell starring as the Hall of Famer whose remarkable career- and courageous battle with ALS- made him one of baseball's most enduring figures.

Gehrig's emotional "Luckiest Man" farewell speech remains one of the most iconic moments in sports history, and Powell now has the opportunity to bring that story to a new generation.

Okay, I can totally see Powell nailing this!

A Texas Reunion Between Actor & Director

This won't be the first time Linklater and Powell have teamed up.

Powell had an early breakout role in Linklater's Everybody Wants Some!!, and the pair reunited years later for the hit film Hit Man, which Powell also co-wrote.

Their creative partnership has already proven to be a successful one, making this reunion exciting- especially with such an unexpected subject.

From Texas To Yankee Stadium

I'll be honest, the Texas-New York contrast is what grabbed my attention.

Linklater is Texas filmmaking royalty. Powell has become one of Hollywood's favorite hometown success stories. So hearing they're making a movie about one of the Yankees' biggest legends felt a little unexpected at first.

Then again, great stories don't belong to just one state. Needless to say, this is one movie I'll definitely be adding to my watchlist!
