Jenna Bush Hager Laughs at Her Famous Texas College Scandal
If you're old enough to remember Jenna Bush Hager's college years making national headlines, you probably remember just how big of a story it was.
Back in 2001, the daughter of then-President George W. Bush found herself making headlines after underage drinking incidents while attending the University of Texas. At the time, it felt like everyone was talking about it.
Now, 25 years later, she's doing something none of us probably saw coming- she's turning one of those moments into an Instagram joke.
Jenna Bush Hager Joined a Viral TikTok Trend
If you've spent any time on Instagram lately, you've probably seen the "getting ready for my documentary" trend, where people jokingly pretend they're being interviewed about one unforgettable moment from their lives.
Jenna Bush Hager put her own spin on it, joking about "that one time" she was 19. If you know, you know!
In the post, she accidentally said the incident happened at El Arroyo before later correcting herself on Today, explaining it actually happened at the original Chuy's in Austin.
She even joked that she'd "set the record straight" when the fictional documentary comes out.
I would totally watch that documentary!
The Story Was Once a Major Texas Headline
It's easy to forget just how much attention this story received.
Just months after George W. Bush became president, Jenna's college years became front-page news after a minor-in-possession citation and later being caught trying to order a margarita with a fake ID at Chuy's.
She completed community service, attended alcohol education classes and paid court costs, but the headlines followed her for years.
Looking back now, it feels like a snapshot of a very different media era.
Why We All Cringe at Our 19-Year-Old Selves
Thankfully, most of us didn't have the entire country watching when we were 19.
Maybe your story wasn't trying to order a margarita with a fake ID. Maybe it was an embarrassing haircut, questionable fashion choices or simply making the kind of decisions that seemed like a good idea at the time.
There's something refreshing about seeing Jenna Bush Hager laugh at one of the biggest stories from her college years instead of pretending it never happened.
Because that's kind of what your late teens and early twenties are for. You make mistakes, you learn from them and, if you're lucky, enough time passes that they become funny stories!
For Jenna, it took 25 years and a viral Instagram trend. For the rest of us, it usually just takes looking back at our 19-year-old selves and thinking, "What was I thinking?!"
