This story gets crazier.

Houston police originally reported that a bystander fatally shot a man who was robbing a couple in their car at a gas station. The incident happened on January 27, but police are NOW saying the whole thing was an immigration scam and that the “victims” were working WITH their “robber”.

In surveillance video, the erstwhile “robber”, Rasshauud Scott is seen running from the scene when a bystander exits his car and shoots Scott.  Scott died from his wounds.

The bystander thought the robbery was real. But, cops say, it was all faked...to get the “victims” work visas in the U.S.

I don’t know how immigration works, because I’ve never tried to immigrate. Apparently, though, in THIS country if you are a victim of a crime, you’re allowed to remain in the country until your case is adjudicated.

Investigators say the faux robbery was set up so the couple who were fake-robbed would be able to obtain U-Visas. These are work visas set aside for immigrants who have been victimized by criminals.

A FOURTH man has been charged with murder in the crime. William Winfrey, 30, helped the couple set up the fake robbery scenario.

ABC-13 News in Houston reports that investigators found text messages from the night of the shooting between Winfrey and Scott, the deceased man. In one message Winfrey writes, “It’s the usual gas station (expletive)” and, “Make all the (expletive) look real”.

The bystander who shot and killed Scott was interviewed by police following the incident and it doesn’t sound like any charges will be filed against him.

As for the “victims”, ABC-13 says they haven’t been able to locate any criminal charges against the couple.  But, in a follow up story, ABC-13 says the same men had pulled the same scam previously.
