You’ll Be Amazed How Many National Treasures You’ll Find in Texas

In the United States there are over 100 different historic locations that are considered national treasures; on the National Trust for Historic Preservation website, there's only a handful of national treasures that are found in the state of Texas.

Unlike places like The Alamo or Casa Navarro that are considered official historic sites in Texas, "national treasures" are places that run the risk of being demolished if they're not protected. That being said, here are some Texas national treasures:

The Astrodome (Houston)

The former home for the Houston Astros & Houston Oilers, The Astrodome, aka the "Eighth Wonder of the World, is actually considered one of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The Astrodome has remained vacant since 2008 but efforts to preserve the Astrodome have been effective, a website has even gone up to help bring updates on the Astrodome's conditions.

The LULAC Clubhouse (Houston)

While the building might look small, its history is ANYTHING but. Houston's LULAC Clubhouse (League of United Latin American Citizens) opened up in 1929 to raise awareness & protection from anti-Mexican violence.

For nearly a century, the LULAC has become one of the most influential Latino civil rights groups of the 20th century. You know you're a big deal when you get the attention of a U.S. president, in this case, John F Kennedy.

Rio Vista Farm (Socorro)

Just about a half hour outside of El Paso, lies the Rio Vista Farm in Socorro, Texas. Since 1915, it has become one of the most important shelters for children during The Great Depression. People aren't the only ones that love the Rio Vista Farm, some ghosts have been known to hang out the premises too.

Texas Courthouses

Which ones? About 234 of them! Most of them are still in use today but some have fallen into a state of disrepair that fixing them would be impossible. However over 60 of them HAVE been restored, but over 70 of them still need help. One example is the Karnes County Court House in Karnes County.

Hopefully we can get a lot of these places listed & marked as historic landmarks so they can get the treatment they need to preserve the state's history.
