Texas Man Accuses Superintendent Of Bullying Him In Middle School

In a dramatic video, a man from Katy, Texas described how he was tormented in school for his last name by his now superintendent of the district.

A Texas man has spoken out about how he was bullied as a junior high school student by the district's current superintendent. Greg Barrett, legal name Greg Gay, went to a Katy Independent School District board meeting to discuss bullying that he endured during his days as a student at West Memorial Junior High School back in the 1970s. In the video, Barrett talks about how he was bullied in school and even had his head slammed into a bathroom urinal. In a dramatic ending, he reveals that the superintendent of the Katy Independent School District, Dr. Lance Hindt, was his childhood bully. Barrett even confessed that there bullying got so bad that he contemplated committing suicide so he wouldn't have to deal with the pain anymore.

Dr. Hindt's response shocked many when he laughed off Barrett's accusations and called them ridiculous. Barrett walked away from the podium but said he had a witness who was there in the bathroom that day. Greg Barrett/Gay gave the name of the witness, Chris Dolan, to KETV who contacted him. Dolan told the news outlet that he has already apologized to Barrett for his role in the bullying and said he wasn't the child he wanted to be. On Tuesday, the superintendent released a statement denying the accusations by Barrett against him:

“It was difficult for me to listen to a gentleman Monday night recount a bullying incident he said occurred more than 35 years ago. As superintendent in three school districts in Texas, I have always tried to create an environment where every student is safe -- physically and emotionally. But when an individual impugns my character and reputation as the instigator of those actions, I am disappointed because it simply is not true.

 

I do not recall this person from my childhood. I did not graduate from the same high school as Mr. Barrett, though we did attend the same junior high in 1978. And my junior high principal -- Mr. McMeans -- would never have let me (or anyone else) get away with the actions he described. I do not suggest that Mr. Barrett was not bullied, only that I was not part of it. Bullying is wrong. Period. It was then and it is today. At Katy ISD, we are always looking for ways to make our campuses and our students safe. I am proud to lead a district that is not afraid to confront bullying behavior – whether in person or online. We are always challenging our teachers and principals to identify harmful behavior and to intervene as necessary.”

Greg Barrett/ Gay said he doesn't want to see Dr Hindt get fired, but would like to see changes in the Katy School District when it comes to the way they deal with bullying and an apology from Hindt to him.
