If you like traveling around Texas and also like a good case of the heebie jeebies now and then, Dead Man's Hole is right up your alley.

Texas is loaded with great vacation spots and day trip destinations, (for cool places to go near El Paso, click here or click here or click here), and many are a little spooky. Some places are supposedly haunted by people that died there but Texas' aptly named "Dead Man's Hole" had many of its dead imported.

Dead Man's Hole is located near Marble Falls, Texas on County Road 401. The 5 foot x 6 foot hole was covered in the late 60's after the small cave had been explored and mapped.

What Happened At Dean Mans Hole?

During and following the Civil War, union sympathizers were caught, "tried" and  sentenced at Dead Man's Hole with most being thrown into the 165 foot deep hole.

Most were hung from an old oak tree that once stood near Dead Man's Hole but was cut down in the late 90's. It's limbs supposedly were scarred from the ropes used in all the hangings. At least 17 people are known to have been tossed into the hole but some sources say the total is actually 36.

Most Notable Dead Man's Hole (Innocent?) Victim

Perhaps one of the most prominent names associated with Dead Man’s Hole is John R. Scott, a judge born in New York that sought freedom in Burnet County. Scott had four sons serving in the Confederate Army but was nonetheless accused of expressing Union sympathies. Scott was chased down by the Fire Eaters as he attempted to flee to Mexico and is said to be one of the bodies that were found at the bottom of Dead Man’s Hole. - texashillcountry.com

How Big Is Dead Man's Hole?

According to tshaonline it has a 5' by 6' "entrance pit"-foot after which there is an almost 30' vertical drop onto a ledge. From there, it's another 103' down, followed by a  50' slope into a 15' pit. In all, it's about 155 feet deep ... and a rough ride for whoever was dropped into it.
