STD infection rates are highest in these eight Texas cities
Eight Texas cities have landed in the top 100 cities in the U.S. with the highest sexually transmitted disease infection rates, this according to a recent study by Innerbody, a healthcare research group. Using the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, In their eighth annual study, Innerbody actually found that the South continues to struggle with high infection rates in its metro areas, and while they fall a little lower on the list, Texas did manage to make it on there!
Innerbody noted that the South, which makes up roughly 39% of the population, accounts for over 60% of the top 25 metropolitan areas with the highest STI rates in this year's study. But, the point out that it's actually a slight improvement over last year's study.
What Texas Cities Have the Highest Rates of STDs?
While none made the top ten, coming in at No. 22 was San Antonio, followed by Killeen at No. 32. Fort Worth was ranked No. 38. The remaining Texas cities to make the list were Amarillo (No. 47), Dallas (No. 61), Austin (No. 62), Houston (No. 64) and El Paso (No. 69).
Innerbody notes that while infection rates are near their record-high levels over the past 20 years, unlike recent years, this year shows a slight decline of nearly 2% in the overall infection rate. However, despite hopeful signs of improvement in overall national figures, STI rates continue to reveal disturbing disparities that deserve reflection and action, and there is significant room for improvement in all respects as our nation continues to confront the epidemic.
