The Texas Accent Is One of America's Most Attractive

I never realized I had an accent until I traveled outside of Texas.

Here, the way we talk just sounds normal. Then you leave the state, throw a "y'all" into a conversation and suddenly someone points out your Texas accent!

Turns out, maybe I should take that as a compliment because a new survey says people really like the way Texans talk.

The Texas Accent Is One of America's Most Attractive

Language learning platform Preply surveyed 2,551 Americans across all 50 states to find out which accents people find the most attractive.

At the state level, Texas came in at No. 2 in the entire country, with only Louisiana ranking higher!

And I'll admit it: I totally find a Texas accent attractive, too. I mean, have you heard Matthew McConaughey talk? Case closed!

Maybe I've been taking the Texas accent for granted this whole time!

Texas Gave America "Y'all" and America Ran With It

One of my favorite findings from the survey involves a word I probably use more than I realize: "y'all." More than half of Americans surveyed said they now use it, which means one of our most recognizable words has made its way well beyond Texas.

Which makes sense; it's friendly, efficient and sometimes "you all" just sounds way too formal.

You're welcome, America.

Not all regional slang travels quite as well, though. Nearly half of Americans said they've struggled to communicate because they didn't understand slang from another part of the country.

America's Regional Accents Could Be Changing

As much as people love a good regional accent, we might actually be hearing less of them. The survey found that 28% of Americans think social media and TikTok are making everyone sound more alike.

And I kind of hate that!

Regional accents and slang are part of what makes different parts of the country unique. I want Texans saying "y'all," and I want to hear words I've never heard before when I visit another state.

But Texas seems to be holding its own. We have one of America's most attractive accents, "y'all" has gone national and people still notice when Texans leave home.

Maybe I really do have an accent after all!
