New Car Wash Rules Hit Texas Counties
Are there too many car washes in Texas?
There seems to be a new car wash on every corner lately, but with the impact of a drought, many Texas cities are doing what they can to conserve water. Hidalgo county in Texas is doing what it can to help out during the drought by putting restrictions on car washes!
The Edinburg City Council in Texas recently passed a new ordinance focused on water conservation for car wash businesses, aiming to protect local water resources and promote sustainable practices amid the growing demand for water in the area.
The ordinance, which is part of the city's Drought Contingency Plan, imposes regulations specifically on water usage, requiring all new car wash facilities to include water recycling systems to reduce their impact on municipal water supplies. The ordinance also states it restricts car washes from being built within two miles of an existing car wash!
Existing facilities are encouraged to adopt similar water-saving measures, though not required under this ordinance. Additionally, the policy supports the city’s broader sustainability objectives, helping to curb the environmental effects of water-intensive businesses within Edinburg.
These steps reflect a trend in Texas cities toward implementing regulations that address water scarcity and conservation, especially in water-demanding sectors like car washes and agriculture.
The new standards align with Edinburg's sustainability goals and serve as a model for other municipalities facing similar water management challenges. For the most part of the year, residents of Hidalgo County have been on water restrictions. You can read more about the ordinance here.
