Surfer Dudes Beg for Paul Walker Statue — Who Should Have a Statue in Your Town?
Two surfer-types recently went to a city council meeting in San Clemente, California. Their goal: to get a 12-foot statue of the late actor Paul Walker erected in San Clemente.
It turned out to be a prank by a comedian named Tom Allen who does his surfer character on Funny or Die under the name "Chad Goes Deep."
The first clue that shenanigans were afoot might have been the faux-surfer's first line: "Whattup, Council...my name is Chad Kroeger."
The reasons they give for wanting a 12-foot Paul Walker statue were A.) he was a big inspiration and B.) his cousin went to high school in San Clemente.
Chad (or was it Bodhi?) also noted that "Detroit has Robocop and Philly has Rocky". That's true, by the way. The Rocky statue has been in Philadelphia since 1981. From the latest information I could gather the Robocop statue has been built but, as of February 2017, it hasn't been installed yet.
So, if you're town were going to build a statue to a pop culture icon, who would you recommend? Corpus Christi already has a giant statue of Selena. Here are some ideas I came up with for some of the great cities in west Texas where the Buzz Adams Morning Show is heard.
Odessa
A statue of actor Billy Bob Thornton as coach Gary Gaines from the movie Friday Night Lights.
Midland
Spud Webb. At only 5'7" he's the shortest player to ever win an NBA slam dunk contest. He played two years at Midland College and led the Chaparrals to a national championship in 1982.
Abilene
Heavyweight boxer Randall "Tex" Cobb. Raised and went to high school in Abilene. His statue should be of him in his most iconic film role as the Biker of the Apocalypse in Raising Arizona.
San Angelo
Matthew McConaughey supposedly owns a ranch near San Anglo and does his shopping in town when he's there. Although he won the Academy Award for Dallas Buyer's Club, a statue of that character might be a little depressing. The statue of Mateo should be of his other iconic film character, Wooderson from Dazed and Confused.
El Paso
"Tuff" Hedeman, greatest rodeo bull-rider of all time and the guy Eric Dane pretends to be when he's about to have a three-way (extremely NSFW) with Rebecca Gayheart and a former Miss America.
