El Paso Spring Breakers Get New Warning About Mexico Trips
Spring break is right around the corner, and with the record-breaking early heat, it's not hard to start daydreaming about margaritas and sunny beaches. And for many in El Paso, a trip to Mexico is probably part of your plans.
Every year around this time, flights out of El Paso International Airport start filling up with travelers headed to beach destinations like Cancun, Cabo, and Puerto Vallarta. But before you start packing swimsuits and sunglasses, U.S. officials are reminding travelers to stay informed and travel smart.
Cancun Is Currently Under a Level 2 Travel Advisory
According to the U.S. Department of State, Quintana Roo- the state that includes Cancun and Tulum- is under a Level 2 travel advisory.
That doesn’t mean don’t go. A Level 2 advisory simply means travelers should exercise increased caution, mainly because crimes like robbery, theft, and carjacking can happen in tourist areas. Officials also advise visitors to stay alert late at night in busy nightlife spots, which tend to be popular during spring break.
Why Officials Issued the Reminder
The advisory reminder follows violence that broke out in parts of Mexico in late February after a military operation that killed a leader connected to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The incident led to reports of vehicle burnings and road blockades in multiple states, prompting U.S. officials to briefly advise Americans in the country to shelter in place.
That alert has since been lifted, but officials say travelers should still stay aware of conditions before visiting.
Officials are also warning tourists about tainted or unregulated alcohol, which has caused some travelers to become sick or lose consciousness in the past.
To stay safe, authorities recommend:
- Not leaving drinks unattended
- Avoiding drinks from strangers
- Sticking to reputable bars or resorts
Basically, the same common-sense rules you’d follow anywhere on vacation.
Final Reminder to El Pasoans Traveling to Mexico
Mexico continues to be one of the most popular spring break destinations for Americans, including many travelers from the Borderland. Officials say the key is simple: stay aware, make smart choices, and keep up with travel updates before your trip.
So if your spring break plans include beaches, sunshine, and maybe a Cancun sunset, go ahead and enjoy the getaway, just make sure you’re traveling prepared and informed.
