Halloween is now one week away, and what might be the most terrifying thing are some facts about candy courtesy of cracked.com. Here is a synopsis if you don't feel like reading the whole thing:

  • In the 1950's, colored popcorn caused one of the largest incidents of mass poisoning. A company used Orange Food Dye No. 1 in popcorn balls, which was made from byproducts of processed coal. Children, after eating the popcorn balls, came down with rashes and diarrhea.
  • The chocolate industry basically runs from child labor. Despite the companies promising to do everything they can to get rid of the practice. That's pretty much all they're good at right now. Promising.
  • In 2008, there were 50 lawsuits against major chocolate companies. Basically there was an agreement between the companies to gradually raise their prices, so each company could do the same to "remain competitive." It got to the point each company had raised their prices by 17%.
  • The candy industry basically monitors its own advertising. This would be like Wall Street regulating its own rules. Oh wait, they already do that.
