If you aren't a fan of red light cameras... good news! Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently signed House Bill 1361 into law, which prohibit the use of "photographic traffic signal enforcement systems." Which is a fancy way of saying red light cameras are now banned.

The bill was authored by Republican state Rep. Jonathan Strickland, who said the bill was motivated by a lot of reason, including

"No.1, privacy concerns. We think that the right to due process matters. You have the right to face your accuser in court."

The law does include a grandfather clause for cities that have red light camera contracts but aren't able to get out of them. Strickland says that there are less than 5 cities in Texas that can't get out of their contracts, and that there will be just 2 cities that will still have red light cameras for two more years until the contract is timed out.

I haven't been able to find which cities have the contracts that will continue on for a couple years, but I'll keep looking.
