6 Prohibited Things To Write On Your License Plate in Texas
We love to decorate our cars; from the paint jobs, to the interiors, bumper stickers, or even our license plates. Sometimes we wanna show off our uniqueness with some unique license plate writing. We ARE allowed to make custom license plates in Texas but there are some things you CAN'T do according to the Texas Administrative Code.
No indecent writing
While this one may appear confusing, the exact text from the TAC says "a direct reference or connotation to a sexual act, sexual body parts, excreta, or sexual bodily fluids or functions". Also if you want to use the number "69", it MUST be in regards to the year or in a different combination.
In other words,
None of THAT on your license plate.
No vulgar words
This one is pretty self-explanatory. No f-bombs, s-bombs, c-bombs...think George Carlin's 7 Dirty Words.
Those are good examples of words you CAN'T show on your plate.
No derogatory words/phrase
This one is also pretty easy to understand, "an expression that is demeaning to, belittles, or disparages any person, group, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, or sexual orientation". Basically you can't use any words that are racist or homophobic.
No references relating to illegal activities
You can't have any plates "promoting harm against anyone, violence, crimes, or unlawful conduct". This also applies to references to gangs; although I'm not sure if "Gucci Gang" or any songs talking about gangs is allowed so... probably best not to risk it.
No references to controlled substances
And finally we have plates prohibiting references to substances such as marijuana, weed, cocaine, etc. While people are still trying to make marijuana LEGAL in Texas, you still can't show your love for it on your plate.
Of course there ARE more things that you CAN'T do when making your own license plate; you can find ALL the information directly from the Texas Transportation Code here.
