Back in 2016, El Paso's Police Chief Greg Allen made a pretty big statement about the Black Lives Matter movement. He told reporters:

Black Lives Matter, as far as I am concerned, is a radical hate group, and for that purpose alone, I think the leadership of this country needs to look a little harder at that group. The consequences of what we saw in Dallas is due to their efforts.

This came on the heels of the ambush in Dallas that killed 5 police officers. At the time, other El Paso officials spoke out against the Police Chief. At the time Veronica Escobar was an El Paso County judge, and she said:

It's an embarrassment. It's not representative of our history or who we are. And from my perspective, an apology should be a minimum requirement. But in my view, that's not enough.

Now there is a petition online to remove Greg Allen from office. Here is what the petition says:

El Paso Police chief Greg Allen stated back in 2016 that he believes BLM (Black Lives Matter) is a radical hate group. In El Paso recently, protests have been created in support of the BLM movement. He should be held accountable for creating distrust between residents and their own police department, whom they should feel safe with.  His distasteful comment seems to still reign true today, as the peaceful protests in El Paso turned a different direction due to the police failing to keep calm under their own pressure, wearing riot gear, pushing/shoving, holding unnecessary weapons during a peaceful protest such as batons, an assault rifle, and throwing tear gas at their community.

El Paso’s Mayor, Dee Margo has failed to speak up for his citizens and only addressed the vandalism done to the police department’s building. Spray paint can be undone, the killings of innocent poc due to police can’t. This petition calls for El Paso’s Mayor to acknowledge his people and their cries, and to hold police Chief Greg Allen accountable for his disgusting statement, and how horribly the El Paso police handled the peaceful protest.
