The New York Strip Could Change its Name to Texas Strip
First it was the Gulf of Mexico and now, a new name could soon grace steakhouse menus. It's no surprise that in Texas, we like steak! Now, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick wants to change the name of one specific cut of meat to better reflect the love Texas has for it's steak! Get ready to order a "Texas Strip" instead of a "New York Strip".
In a lengthy X post, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick shared some facts about cattle in Texas and called for a name change to the New York Strip- changing it to Texas Strip, and he's taking this fight straight to the Texas Senate.
So why is it even called a "New York Strip"? According to Patrick, and several sources, the name originated in a New York steakhouse called Delmonico's in New York City. According to Chowhound, the restaurant simply listed the cut on their menu as a New York strip, and the name caught on.
Well, Patrick doesn't think that's right writing in his X post:
Liberal New York shouldn’t get the credit for our hard-working ranchers. We promote the Texas brand on everything made or grown in Texas because it benefits our economy and jobs.
It's kind of hard to argue with that statement; according to the Texas Department of Agriculture, the cattle industry had a $15.5 billion market value, the largest of all the state's agricultural commodities by a vast margin. Patrick assured that the resolution will help better market Texas beef. And it would seem that many kind of agree with him!
If approved, the change would be slowly, starting in Texas restaurants and grocery stores, and eventually hoping it will catch on across the globe.
