Don't shoot the messenger New Mexico, I'm just telling 'ya what I read on the interweb. For the 4th year in a row, Texas' neighbor to the west came in dead last in child well being.

The Kids Count Data Book from the Annie E. Casey Foundation compiled a whole bunch of data to evaluate children's well being in each of the 50 United States of America in 4 different categories.

For the 4th year in a row, when it comes to kids, the land of enchantment didn't look very enchanted.

Some of the things holding New Mexico down included high poverty, declining educational stats and a rising child death rate. The state’s rankings in the four categories were:

  • 49th in economic well-being.
  • 50th in education,
  • 46th in health
  • And 50th in family & community. - sourcenm.com

The news wasn't all bad though as New Mexico did see some improvements. According to sourcenm.com, New Mexico has seen a lower rate of teen births as well as a drop in the number of teens who were neither going to school or working and there was a small upswing in the number of high school grads for the 47th state. How Did Texas Do?

We're not judging you New Mexico, trust me ... we pretty much suck too. Sadly, the lone star state didn't do very much better in the Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2025 Kids Count Data Book. We were right by NM, coming in 44th nationwide.
