Walk on the Wild Side with New Mexico’s Famous Catwalk Trail
When you're looking for an outdoor adventure, you don't have to look further than New Mexico.
The Land of Enchantment is full of things to do outside. It not only is it home to an amazing hot air balloon festival, has some scenic views for hiking, it has this unique trail that you can visit.
The Catwalk Recreation Area in the Gila National Forest in Glenwood, New Mexico is considered one of the most beautiful and interesting trails. For many who are big lovers of hiking, and even those who are considering becoming avid hikers, this trail is short but a unique experience for hikers of any level.
The Catwalk Trail is often referred to as just the "Catwalk," and follows the path of a historic pipeline built in the 1890s to supply water to local mining operations.
The fact that half of the hike is on a suspended metal bridge is what gives this trail its name "catwalk trail". It's narrow but has such beautiful scenery along the way that includes waterfalls and a swimming hole at the end.
Funnily enough, the Catwalk is dog friendly- though they do advise that if you have small dogs their little paws may not do well with the steel grating.
The Catwalk Trail offers both a historical glimpse into New Mexico’s mining days and an exciting outdoor experience. Its mix of adventure, scenery, and accessibility makes it a popular spot for both locals and visitors to explore.
There is also a small recreational area for a picnic; and as always with any National Forest, pick up your trash!
