If you're buying a car in New Mexico, you might want to read what the New Mexico Attorney General has to say about car purchases before you make a move.

Car buying is tricky, no matter what state you live in, and it's no secret that some sellers are totally out to get you. Whether it's a private sale, a "mom 'n pop" car lot or a full on dealership; you have to keep your eyes open.

The AG's advice could apply to El Pasoans too since we're pretty much surrounded by New Mexico. As can this Latin phrase - Caveat emptor ... "let the buyer beware".

That's the short form of the phrase, the whole thing goes like this:

quia ignorare non debuit quod jus alienum emit ("Let a purchaser beware, for he ought not to be ignorant of the nature of the property which he is buying from another party.") - findlaw.com

Bottom line: do your homework, know who you're dealing with and be cautious. New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez seems to agree with this and has some advice to those car shopping in the land of enchantment.

Common sense stuff really but things many of us overlook, especially when subjected to high pressure sales people or "too good to be true" deals. When it comes to private sales, if you get stuck, there may not be much you can do about it,

If it's a dealership that shafts you, you can easily file a complaint with the Automotive Consumer Protection Program.  No matter who you're dealing with, the NM AG suggests keeping super good records of all talks, emails, texts or any other form of communication between you and the seller.
